Mama Doll creates music like a deep, red wine, the kind you keep drinking even though you know the hangover it will bring the next morning. The deeper you delve, the more its mystical, trance-like tone overtakes you.

Biography

We are a group of people who love making music together, apparently no matter the distance. For a brief, and magical time period, we managed to all live in Spokane, WA. Now we span three cities and two states.

And it doesn’t seem to matter. After returning from what we thought was a permanent hiatus, we’re back. Our self-titled record is out now. Take a listen and take care.

Members:
Sarah Berentson - Vocals, Guitar, Keys

Jen Landis - Bass

What would the Spokane music scene be like without Mama Doll? Much less vibrant, that’s for sure. This folk quartet has been playing in various incarnations since 2013, when singer-songwriter Sarah Berentson formed the band as the long tenure of her folk-fusion act Terrible Buttons was winding down. Her expressive voice remains Mama Doll’s driving force, haunting and ethereal one moment, upbeat and sunny the next.

The name actually comes from a Flannery O’Connor novel “Wise Blood,” which I regrettably have never finished. Mama Doll is the name that one of the young characters called their former grandma. It’s within the first 10 pages of the book. When I read “mama doll” I set the book down to write down the name idea and then I guess never picked the book back up again.
